Science for Environment Policy (2012) Special Issue 33 Under water restrictions, farmers will achieve the optimal balance of income and efficient water use if they combine the planting of crops that require little water with the planting of more profitable crops that need more water, according to research.
In areas of irrigated farmland, water supply is becoming increasingly scarce, particularly in regions that suffer droughts and have experienced increased levels of irrigation, such as in the Mediterranean. Decision support systems (DSS), based on scientifically informed models, can help farmers decide which crops to grow and how best to use their limited supply of water to optimise their resources in these conditions.
